PV system

A full-sized photovoltaic system
for self-assembly in class

With this educational PV system, we want young people to learn how solar energy works at an early age. By working out how it works using our instructions and setting up the system from scratch, the students will experience firsthand how easy it is to use self-generated electricity. The system's dimensions are true to the original, thus conveying a realistic feel for solar energy.

Teamwork plus knowledge

The educational PV system is designed as a ground-mounted kit, allowing students to assemble it independently with the help of a teacher in approximately 1.5 hours. All components are easy to assemble using the included tools.

For assembly, the class/group is divided into two teams (yellow and orange) of up to 30 students. Each team is then divided into three sub-teams, one each for assembling the base, the stand, and the table. Once the three components are complete, the entire team assembles them, attaches the PV module, and plugs in the control box.

The construction is suitable for repeated assembly and disassembly, so that not only one class can gain experience with the solar DIY kit, but many classes/work groups over many years.

The system can be mounted in any orientation, as it's easy to move (with the help of 3-4 students). The inclination of the modules can also be individually adjusted from horizontal to vertical. This allows students to compare different setups.

Our educational PV system, in its BASIC version, comes with a switch box for stand-alone operation. The maximum output is approximately 350 watts. With proper orientation, this can be used to power electric musical instruments (e.g., electric piano or electric guitar), a small popcorn machine, or similar devices.

Pedagogical goals

  • Self-organized learning and teamwork: The materials enable independent work and promote self-efficacy and self-organization.

  • Competency orientation: The PPV facility meets key curriculum requirements in the area of “Using models and experiments.”

  • Sustainability: Particular emphasis is placed on the connection to the educational goal of "Education for Sustainable Development." The educational PV system makes sustainability a stimulating and motivating experience for young people.

  • Project-based performance assessment: A school project using the PPV system could even replace a regular physics school assignment.
